About the Akha People

The Akha People originated in southern China and immigrated to Myanmar around 250 to 280 years ago.

Today, the Akha People are an estimated 2.5 million persons living in the border areas of five modern nation-states: Yunnan province in Southwest China, the northern parts of Laos, Vietnam and Thailand, and eastern Myanmar.

The Akha live in what is currently called the "Mekong Quadrangle", an area of about 500 by 600 kilometers or 30,000 square kilometers, approximately the size of the European Alps.

The Akhas are concentrated in an area that is crossed by several major rivers: the Mekong, the Red and Black Rivers, and the Salween, and their many tributaries which cut steep valleys.

Most of the Akha in Thailand arrived after World War II from the politically unstable northern states of Myanmar.

The official number of Akha in the mountains of Thailand was last estimated in 1995 to be 58,000 persons.

OUR MINISTRY

The Akha People are rich in culture, history, knowledge, and tradition.

However, the Akha are one of the smallest and poorest of the hill tribe groups living in the Mekong Quadrangle in Southeast Asia.

Please help the Akha People in Thailand by supporting Akha Christian Ministries (ACM).

ACM works to present the Good News of Jesus Christ to the Akha People and to show God's love in words and action in the Akha Community by providing support for Christian Ministries working in the Mekong Quadrangle.

PLEASE HELP ACM to pursue its mission to help the Christian Akha People by contributing to this campaign.
